When living and volunteering in a new country, the sense of connection and belonging can shift from day to day. Sometimes you feel at home, other times you may feel distant or alone. Notice where you are on that scale and reflect on what supports your sense of belonging and what small steps could make it stronger.
This is an invitation for you to reflect on the question “How connected do I feel here? What helps me feel connected?”
What you will need:
- A notebook or blank sheet of paper to create your Connection Meter
- A pen or pencil for writing reflections
- Coloured pens or markers (optional, to mark your position or highlight changes)
- If doing it digitally – a phone, tablet, or computer (notes app, drawing app, or document tool).
Instructions:
- Create a simple visual scale labeled “Connection Meter” or download it here (1,46 MB, pdf)
- 0 - completely disconnected, 10 - deeply connected and at home
- Place yourself on the scale and reflect:
- What made me choose this number today?
- What helped me feel more connected?
- What moments made me feel outside, confused, or alone?
- What small step could increase my connection tomorrow?
Reflection Questions (after a week or longer)
- Do I notice patterns when I feel most connected or disconnected?
- What people, places, or activities increase my sense of belonging?
- What tends to make me feel like an outsider?
- How do I usually respond when I feel disconnected? Is it helpful?
- What habits or steps could help me build a stronger sense of home here?
