Wait... That's Me?

You’ve been living, learning, adjusting, and growing for a while now - and whether you’ve noticed or not, something in you has probably shifted. This reflection is your chance to pause and ask: Who am I now, halfway in? But instead of writing a long essay or filling out a form, you’ll let images do the talking.

What you will need:

  • An image collection (or printed photos, postcards, magazine cut-outs, or image cards)
  • A notebook or blank sheet of paper for notes
  • A pen or pencil for writing reflections
  • If doing it digitally – a phone, tablet, or computer (image gallery, shared folder, or online image collection)

Instructions:

  • Look at the image collection in front of you.

  • Choose 3 images that represent:

    • How I’ve changed since I arrived

    • A way I’ve surprised myself in this period

    • Something I’ve realized or confirmed about who I am

  • For each image, write or say a few words:

    • Why did I choose this image?

    • What part of me does it reflect?

    • How does it connect to my experience so far?

Share(optional)

If you’re reflecting with a peer, it could be a great opportunity for your peer to notice things you didn’t. Here is the flow you can both follow:

  • Each of you chooses your 3 images.

  • Take turns sharing why you picked them.

  • Your buddy listens and is curious about your choices:
What do you like about this image?
Can you tell me more about how it connects to you?
Has this surprised you about yourself?
Do you think this part of you has changed since you arrived?

  • Switch roles

Guidance for mentors/facilitators

  • Provide the image set (printed or digital).
  • Allow 10–15 minutes for volunteers to choose and reflect silently.
  • Then invite them to share in pairs or in a small circle (only if they feel comfortable).
  • Encourage depth with prompts such as:
Which image was easiest to choose? Which was hardest?
What surprised you about your choices?
If you had to title your set of 3 images, what would it be?
