Once you’ve settled in, your days start to fill with a mix of familiar routines and unexpected moments. Even in a short-term project, these everyday experiences can teach you a lot - if you pause to notice them. This stage encourages you to pay attention to the small things: how you respond to situations, where your energy goes, what challenges you, and what you’re learning from the people around you.
Reflection at this point is about building the habit of observing your day-to-day life and recognising the learning hidden in ordinary moments. Taking a little time to notice your everyday experiences - and doing this regularly - helps you develop the skill of learning from whatever life brings, even after your volunteering adventure has ended.
Use the guiding questions below to help you capture your ongoing learning. They’re meant to support you in pausing daily or weekly to notice what is shifting within you and in your environment.
Guiding questions:
- What situation pushed me out of my comfort zone? How did I react?
- What moments gave me energy today or this week?
- What stories or updates am I sharing with people back home? What does that reveal about what matters to me?
- How do I deal with misunderstandings? What felt difficult, and how did I respond?
- What have I learned from someone whose background or perspective is different from mine?
- How am I navigating differences in customs or behaviour?
- What new skill or personal quality have I noticed developing?
- What have I contributed recently that I feel good about?
- What did I practice or improve this week?
- What’s one thing I would approach differently next time?
Respond in whatever way feels natural - notes, voice recordings, sketches, or short reflections. If you feel drawn to explore something more deeply, you can choose one of the suggested reflection methods for this phase.
Ask yourself “What do I need right now?” and choose a method if you want to explore deeper:
| Purpose | Method | You will need: |
| To understand my energy and balance | Energy Tracker | |
| To notice intercultural moments creatively | Comic Strip | |
| To capture my week emotionally | Soundtrack of the Week |
